Optimus

The Tesla Bot

On 30th September at the AI Day 2022 event, Tesla unveiled their AI humanoid bot called Optimus. The bot strutted on stage in a mechanical fashion and made brief interactions with the crowd by waving and showing off some dance moves, probably not to the same standard you would see at Zouk, but it’s a start!

What Is Going On?

Optimus is designed to help with manual repetitive tasks. Providing assistance in manufacturing plants and helping with daily tasks in offices and households such as carrying heavy items, watering plants and cleaning.

Optimus Specs:

Height: 173cm,

Weight: 57 kg with a carrying capacity of 20 kg.

What Optimus was doing in the video above may at first seem unexciting as robots that can jump and perform manual tasks have been around for years. However, it is important to note that this bot has Artificial Intelligence (AI). This means it has the power to learn new things on its own. This is not just a robot that performs repetitive tasks. Optimus is aware of its surroundings and is able to process new information to improve.

Tesla stated that the same AI system that is installed on their self-driving vehicle systems is also connected to the AI system on Optimus. Therefore, data from Tesla vehicles moving all around the world will feed information to the brain of Optimus, which will enhance its knowledge on a large scale.

Tesla has equipped itself with the capabilities to produce these AI bots on a mass scale. This is something that previous robotics engineers were not able to do. This is exciting news as over time AI bots will be accessible to more and more people.

I think we can look forward to the AI revolution in our lifetimes!
